Couple shut down busy motorway for romantic proposal

A Texas man wanted to do something ’a bit different’ for his proposal to his girlfriend so he shut down a section of a busy motorway.

Vidal Valladares Navas, 24, wanted to propose to Michelle Wycoff, 23, on this particular stretch of road as it had special meaning for them as a couple - on their second date, they had gone for a motorcycle ride along it to admire Houston’s lit-up skyline.

To surprise Michelle, Vidal told her that they were going to drive to a party but instead had family and friends in eight cars follow them and block the four lanes of traffic so he could jump out and propose to her in the middle of the motorway.

"I said, ’Are you serious?’" Wycoff said. "Then I saw all my family and friends with cameras and I looked where Vidal was and he was down on one knee.

"Honestly, I didn’t think about if it was a good idea or a bad idea. I was just so happy in the moment. I love him so much."

Traffic was only blocked for 35 seconds but fellow Houston residents were not happy, with many pointing out that he could have caused a pile-up.

For example, the Houston Press described it, thusly:

"It was outrageous pomposity perpetrated by people who have no regard for the safety of others."

That’s them told - except it doesn’t seem like they regret it.

"Love makes you do stupid things and I wanted to do something big for my girl. Something that she will always remember," Valladares said.

Mission accomplished.
