Chris Smalling’s improvement at Manchester United shows my coaching methods work, says Louis van Gaal

Chris Smalling improvement at Manchester United has obviously  been atributted to many factors. However Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes the form of Smalling this season is evident of his coaching prowess.

The centre-half has been one of United’s most consistent players and his performances have been one of the main reasons for their excellent defensive record as they have only conceded eight goals in the Premier League so far.

Van Gaal, who has mistakenly called Smalling ‘Mike’ on a few occasions this season, has been pleased with the 25-year-old’s progress under him but would not be drawn just how crucial the England defender has become.

However, he did admit that improving and developing players is what motivates him after more than 20 years of management.

When asked about Smalling’s form: ‘We have just developed players which is the essence of why I am a coach. I like to help players in their development and he has developed himself in many, many ways.

‘Not in one particular aspect, but in many aspects and that’s why you can see he is a different player for yourself. I don’t want to answer that question because it is too positive.’

United visit Vicarage Road to play Watford on Saturday in the Premier League.
