Watford 1 Manchester United 2,

A Troy Deeney own goal in the 90th minute sent Manchester United to the top of the table, moments after their chance of going top appeared to have disappeared.

United had led since the 11th minute, when Memphis Depay supplied a sweet finish on his return to the first team, but Watford hit back three minutes from the end when Deeney smashed home from the penalty spot.

It was a spectacular end to a game in which United dominated for long stretches despite being without Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, and losing Ander Herrera to injury in the first half.

Watford had improved in the closing stages and looked set to deny United top spot before Deeney's late intervention.

United had started brightly, pouring forward from midfield with Juan Mata sending a centre scudding across the face of the Watford goal, Ashley Young shooting too high and panic-stricken home defender Allan Nyom slicing an attempted clearance on to the top of his net.

It was, therefore, little surprise when United went in front in the 11th minute. Young found space on Watford's right flank to supply Herrera, whose whipped cross was perfectly placed for Memphis to steer high into the net.

As the home side struggled for a foothold, Young headed over and Morgan Schneiderlin's close-range blast was a yard too high.
