By now you should have heard that Nasa researchers found water on Mars? Google celebrates the discovery with a doodle.

“We felt compelled to honor such an exciting discovery with a Doodle,” writes Google on its official blog. The doodle it created shows a ‘happy’ Red Planet sipping water from a glass and beaming.

Images that Nasa tweeted about the discovery show cliffs and steep walls of valleys and craters, streaked with summertime water flows, that, in the most active spots, combine to form intricate patterns.

“Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past. Under certain circumstances, liquid water has been found on Mars,” said Jim Green, the agency’s director of planetary science.

The discovery of the water flows was made when scientists developed a new technique to analyse chemical maps of the surface of Mars obtained by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft.
