Love At A Higher Level: To Fulfill His Late Wife’s Dream This Grieving Husband Planted Four Miles Of Sunflowers

When Babbette Jaquish died of cancer in November, she left behind a loving family and an unfulfilled ambition. During her nine-year fight with cancer, she decided that she wanted to plant a crop of sunflowers in Wisconsin in order to help others living with the disease. Between Babbette and her husband Don, they began to plant a field of gold.

Neighbours willingly handed over the roadside section of their farms at whatever price Don saw fit. However, when Babbette succumbed to cancer she left her project incomplete. As a tribute to his late wife, Don has now planted four miles of sunflowers. Her story is best explained in his words.

“There wasn’t anyone that met her that didn’t love her”

“She always loved flowers, but sunflowers were her favourite”

“They fit her personality. She’d walk into a room and her smile would light up the whole room.”

Four months after Babbette died, Don found a letter that Babbette had written to him. “You move on and live each day,” she wrote. “Feel me in the morning air, and when you wake up and make your coffee. I will be there always.” Having fulfilled her wish, Don said he now feels her in the sunflowers too.

At the end of the summer, the seeds will be harvested and sold with Babbette’s smiling face on them as “Babbette’s Seeds Of Hope” with a portion of the revenue going to cancer charities.
