The lady pleaded guilty to the charge when she appeared before Hwange magistrate Portia Mhlanga. |
Reports from Newzimbabwe.com are that, in a bizarre admittance, the woman told the court that she committed the crime because the man who impregnated her had abandoned her and she had no means to raise the baby. “I couldn’t keep the baby because I had no means to take care of it after the person who made me pregnant disappeared,” she told the magistrate.
Kele was convicted and will remain in custody pending sentence on Wednesdsay 12th August 2015.
Prosecuting, Onias Nyathi told how Kele, who had concealed the pregnancy, gave birth in the bush in May this year. “On a date not known to the prosecutor but between the period May 14 and May 18 this year, the accused went to fetch firewood in the bush near her homestead. “While in the bush, she gave birth to a baby and strangled it,” said Nyathi. Kele buried the body in a shallow grave, the prosecutor added. Other villagers alerted the police after noticing that her pregnancy had disappeared.
Kele admitted having given birth killing the baby.
A medical check-up at St Patrick’s Hospital in Hwange confirmed she had given birth, leading to her arrest.
